What is a copyright?

A copyright protects artistic creation, photographs, sculptures, computer software, architectural drawings, and similar items.

How does a copyright protect my ideas?

A copyright allows you to control who is able to use your creation. This is done by means of licensing your creation to someone else, subject to the terms of a licensing agreement.

How long does the process of completing a copyright take?

Usually about 1-2 months.

What can I do if someone infringes on my copyright?

According to the Federal Government in Canada, there are several ways a copyright holder can seek compensation for infringement of his or her copyright. One way is to sue the individual, asking the courts to award monetary compensation for each work where an infringement occurred. The pre-established damages used in civil litigation are called statutory damages. Currently, the courts may award penalties of $20,000 per image for commercial infringement. So for example if someone used five photographs for commercial purposes, the penalty is $100,000! It is much less for non-commercial infringement. For example, someone who downloads five songs illegally could face penalties ranging from $2,500 or more, depending on the number of copyright holders per song.

When should I open my pool for the summer?

The best time to get your pool running is right after the ice is gone. This year that could be as soon as the middle of March to the beginning of April. When your pool water is cold, algie has a hard time growing. The warmer your water gets the more likely you are to have algie.

After the ice is gone, remove your winter cover, and check your water. It should be clear, and any dirt and leaves should be sitting on the bottom. Slowly remove the leaves and other large debris. If you have to add water to your pool to get it circulating, try not to disturb any dirt that has settled on the bottom of the pool. To get rid of any dirt that has settled on the bottom of your pool, start your pump, and if possible, vacuum your pool “to waste.” The dirt is usually so fine that it will clog up your filter in as little as 3 to 5 min. If you end up stirring up the water and the water becomes cloudy, turn off the pump, and let the pool sit for a few days. All the dirt will settle back to the bottom. Once you have removed the dirt, you should balance your pool water and add chlorine. If you don’t plan to use your pool for a few months, try and bring the chlorine level up to 1PPM. Keep the heater off. Cold water requires less chlorine than warm water. If you have a winter safety cover, you can re-install it for safety reasons and to keep out debris.

As long as the water is cold, you do not have to run your pump 24 hrs a day. Depending on the temperature, you can probably run your pump as little as 4 hrs every 3 or 4 days. Check your water, and keep your chlorine level between 1 and 3PPM. Do not try and heat your water if it contains algie. It is much easier to clean up your pool if the water is cold than if it is warm.

When you are ready to open your pool for the summer, just turn on the heater, and you will be ready to enjoy your pool.

What is Probate?

Probate is the judicial process where a will is proved valid by the court. When a loved one passes away, the deceased usually leaves behind a will detailing how they would like to handle their estate. Typically dealing with probate requires an expert family law team dedicated to probate applications and the probate process.

Dealing with the estate left behind requires a Grant of Probate issued by the Court of Queen’s Bench. A Grant of Probate is required to prove that the will is legally valid. If there is no will left behind, the court assigns an administrator of the estate and they are responsible to administer the deceased’s estate. If you are named an executor in someone’s will, you still may have to apply for probate.

The Executor

The executor is responsible for dealing with the deceased’s estate. The estate includes everything the deceased had owned such as real estate, assets, life insurance policies, stocks, investments, etc.

However, this also means that the executor is responsible with any leftover debts, filing tax returns and any other legal issues. Hiring a probate lawyer makes the process for applying for a Grant of Probate a lot easier.

Why It’s Necessary?

Probate can be avoided if the estate is small or simple. This usually means having just a single beneficiary. However, most estates have complications which no matter how small, would require probating.

Fees for probate in Alberta, Canada are worth it to minimize risks and complications, compared to what could happen if you decide not to go through the probate process. Avoiding probate introduces a lot of risks, such as the court making claims against the estate. With probate, wills are ensured to be legally binding.
