If your home has lingering odors, these could be originating from particles trapped within your duct work. Dirty air ducts are not only capable of harboring odors, they can also circulate these unpleasant smells throughout the entire house.

If you are the original owner of your home, you probably have a good idea of the source of your odor problem. However, if you reside in a pre-owned home and have never had the ducts professionally cleaned, it can be harder to decipher the source of recurring smells.

In our experience, foul odors emanating from a home’s duct system are most commonly attributed to bacteria, mold, pets, tobacco use, vermin, or food preparation.

Bacteria - the amount of dirt and dust that accumulates within an air duct system can be astounding. This debris can become a virtual incubator for bacteria, which can produce bad odors. In addition to giving the air a dreadful smell, bacteria can also enter your living environment and have a negative effect on your health. Fortunately, a thorough cleaning and disinfecting of the air duct system is quite effective at combating bacteria.

Mold - the musty smell of mold is much more than a nuisance, it can trigger allergies and cause respiratory problems. Mold is usually found in air ducts that contain some degree of moisture or humidity. Mold is a member of the fungi family and can reproduce in large quantities if not addressed. Mold releases spores into the air, which can get distributed throughout your home if not eradicated from the duct system.

Pets - dogs, cats and other animals that currently share your home, or shared your home in the past, can contribute a wide variety of disagreeable aromas. For example, fur and dander can accumulate in the air ducts, disseminating a pet’s essence throughout the entire house. Also, the scent of pet urine is particularly offensive and can cling to the dust and grime within a home’s duct system. Unless the air ducts are properly cleaned, this sickening odor will remain indefinitely.

Did you know that your home creates an estimated 40 pounds of dust each year? If you are wondering where that dust goes, the answer is into your air ducts and out into the cool or warm air pumped into each and every room in your home.

What is in Your Ducts?

The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) advocates for routine air duct cleaning and maintenance, and not just to control dust. Other contaminants, such as pet dander, pollen, powdery mildew and mold, and chemicals, will also be circulated along with the dust.

Why Clean Your Ducts?

Over time, your air ducts create their own inner lining of dust, debris, and toxins, which are then circulated and re-circulated throughout your home, causing your HVAC system to work harder than it needs, to heat and cool your home.

How Duct Cleaning Works

When you contract with a professional to clean your air ducts, it is important to know what will be done during the cleaning. Only a thorough cleaning will prevent contaminants from spreading throughout your whole duct system again. With a professional duct cleaning job, each of the following will receive an inspection and thorough cleaning:

Air ducts

Air registers

Diffusers and grilles

Heat exchangers

Coils for heating and cooling

Drain (drip) pans

Fan, including housing and motor

HVAC unit housing

Why Air Duct Cleaning is Important This Christmas Season

During the hustle and bustle of the holidays, spending time with your family members are one of the most important activities during the Christmas season. Before all of the dinners, present exchanges and get-togethers with close family and friends, the cleanliness of your air ducts can be very important to the overall health of the people you care about the most. It’s highly likely that people of various ages will be in your home, and will have different sensitivities to dust and pet dander. Air duct cleaning could make all the difference for a grandparent who has extremely sensitive allergies.

Air Duct Cleaning is Highly Effective

You would never think that dust that has accumulated in your duct work would impact the level of health in your home. Since we don’t see the air that is typically circulating through our home, we never really give it a second thought. It isn’t until our professional air duct cleaning technicians show the inside of your duct work that it becomes clear, your air ducts are dirty. You might even find that even after dusting off furniture, that the main reason might be dirty air ducts. Can you imagine pet hair mixed with your famous egg nog? Make your holiday memorable with a thorough cleaning that cleans out dog and cat hair. It will leave you with a sense of confidence that your home is completely spic and span.

Wouldn’t it be great to know that your children are breathing clean air as well while they’re opening gifts on Christmas morning? How about a dryer vent cleaning to ensure the safety of your family while everyone sleeps on Christmas Eve? Make sure you put air duct cleaning on your Christmas list to ensure the health and safety of your family and friends to bring in the New Year.

Ducts are the lungs of a home. Over time dirt, dust, debris, animal hair/dander, tobacco smoke and other contaminants can accumulate inside the ducts. Dirty ducts can also become an ideal breeding ground for pollen, mold spores, mildew, bacteria and other potentially harmful bio-pollutants.

All of these contaminants can easily pass through the furnace filter and into the air you, your family or co-workers breathe.
